Easy Ingredient Substitutions

Simple ways to swap ingredients while keeping everyday recipes balanced and satisfying.

Swap by job, not just by ingredient

Before replacing an ingredient, ask what it does. Beans add bulk and protein; lemon adds acid; cream adds richness; flour thickens. A good swap performs the same job, even if the flavour changes slightly.

Use substitutions as a guide, then taste and adjust salt, acid, and seasoning before serving.

  • Use chickpeas, lentils, or white beans interchangeably in many stews.
  • Use lemon juice or vinegar for acidity.
  • Use frozen vegetables when fresh produce is unavailable.

Adjust cooking time

Different ingredients cook at different speeds. Tender leafy vegetables need only minutes, while root vegetables need longer. Canned beans are already cooked and should be warmed near the end of a recipe.

Allergies need a different approach

A substitution list is not a guarantee of allergen safety. Check every product label, prevent cross-contact, and consult a qualified professional for individual medical or allergy advice.
